Q&A On Couples Therapy With Emily Liberto

Have you and your partner been considering couple’s therapy but want some more information before you commit to it? Look no further! Our amazing therapist, Emily Liberto, has answered some frequently asked questions on couple’s therapy.

1. How long do sessions last?

The intake (initial session) is 75 minutes and subsequent sessions are 60 minutes.

2. How many sessions does it take to see results?

Couples counseling looks different from one couple to the next as the duration of therapy depends on many factors. These might include the specific issues the couple are facing as well as the couple's ability to notice patterns and make positive changes by implementing interventions. From the very first session, I work to help couples identify the kind of relationship they would like and develop a plan to support their goals so they can start seeing changes in the first few sessions. Weekly sessions are recommended to maintain momentum.

3. What makes couples therapy different at Sage House Therapy?

I incorporate art therapy into my work with couples. It provides a hands-on (and fun!) way to explore topics that can initially seem intimidating. No art experience is needed - just a willingness to try something new.

4. What are some methods you implement during couples therapy sessions?

I rely heavily on Emotionally Focused Therapy, which views relationships through the lens of attachment. I first help couples identify and understand the negative cycle they experience. Once they uncover the emotions driving their cycle, we explore and implement more effective ways to communicate to strengthen their connection. I use art therapy to support these goals and sometimes include strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

5. How will we know if couples therapy is working?

You can notice a difference when you and your partner can recognize your negative cycle and de-escalate conflict more easily. By understanding each other's emotions, you can respond in ways that increase your sense of connection.

6. Should I see a therapist individually?

Individual therapy can be particularly helpful for clients who have a history of trauma.
